Science
A working companion to Year 7 science: concepts explained, formulas collected, worked examples, and graded practice. Each topic also exports to a printable workbook and answer key.
VCAA Science is organised in two-year bands. This Year 7 pathway covers a deliberate slice of the Levels 7-8 Science band, so the companion Year 8 page completes the band.
Topics currently ready to study.
Topics with a separate printable answer booklet.
Topics that go beyond the year's core coverage.
Biological sciences
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): similarities and differences between organisms, the Linnaean hierarchy, and using dichotomous keys to identify species.
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): matter and energy flow through ecosystems, producers and consumers, food webs, and the effect of changing biotic and abiotic factors.
Chemical sciences
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): using the particle model to explain solids, liquids and gases, state changes, density, diffusion, and gas pressure.
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): pure substances vs mixtures, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, and separating methods including filtration, distillation, evaporation, chromatography and magnetic separation.
Earth and space sciences
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): how the relative positions and motion of Earth, Sun and Moon produce day/night, seasons, phases of the Moon, eclipses and tides.
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks form, identifying rocks by their features, and the rock cycle that links them.
Physical sciences
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): contact and non-contact forces, free-body diagrams, balanced vs unbalanced forces, and how net force changes an object's motion.
Year 7 (Levels 7-8 band): the six simple machines (lever, inclined plane, wedge, pulley, screw, wheel and axle) and how they change the direction or size of a force.
