Science
A working companion to Year 10 science: concepts explained, formulas collected, worked examples, and graded practice. Each topic also exports to a printable workbook and answer key.
VCAA Science is organised in two-year bands. This Year 10 pathway covers a deliberate slice of the Levels 9-10 Science band, so the companion Year 9 page completes the band.
Topics currently ready to study.
Topics with a separate printable answer booklet.
Topics that go beyond the year's core coverage.
Biological sciences
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): structure of DNA and chromosomes, cell division by mitosis and meiosis, and predicting inheritance with Mendelian monohybrid crosses.
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): variation, selection pressure and adaptation; evidence from fossils, biogeography, comparative anatomy and molecular data; speciation and relatedness.
Chemical sciences
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): structure of the periodic table, groups and periods, electron configuration, reactivity trends, and introduction to ionic and covalent bonding.
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): word and symbol equations, balancing reactions step-by-step, and using the Law of Conservation of Mass to check that atoms are only rearranged.
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): classifying synthesis, decomposition and displacement reactions; factors affecting reaction rate via collision theory; and distinguishing exothermic from endothermic reactions.
Earth and space sciences
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): the movement of carbon between atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere; key natural fluxes and the impact of human activities on the carbon balance.
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): telescopes and their discoveries, rocket propulsion and orbits, crewed missions, satellite applications, and the challenges of living beyond Earth.
Year 10 (Levels 9-10 band): structure of the universe (galaxies, stars, black holes), evidence for the Big Bang (redshift, CMB, light-element abundance), and the stellar life cycle.
